Simpang Duck Egg Char Kuey Teow, Taiping, Perak

My parents always made it a point to drop by this place to get their Char Kuey Teow fix. On my recent trip back to Taiping, I too made it a point to visit the famous Char Kuey Teow stall. Located along the Simpang main road, the stall is right just across the road from the new Simpang McDonald's drive-thru and is next to a mini market. There is no obvious sign so it would be best to go slow as soon as you see the McDonald's on your right.

Simple stall with only one dish.
I was there at 730pm with my grandparents and shortly after we reached, a couple of cars and motorbikes too pulled up to wait for the stall to open. The old uncle manning the stall only starts frying his signature kuey teow at 8pm, no earlier, no later and during the wait, more people came and another old man had to jolt down the orders as the uncle set about making fireworks with his wok and charcoal.

Price list.
Fireworks in action.

The specialty of his stall was the Kuey Teow fried with duck egg and at RM3.40 for a small plate and RM3.60 for a large one, this place (and Taiping in general) still remains one of the few places in Malaysia where a good place of Char Kuey Teow doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

The secret ingredients.

The Char Kuey Teow is whipped and stirred into perfection with the creamy and rich duck egg mixed with chicken egg before it is served on a leaf-lined plate. You can really taste the smokiness of the charcoal in the noodles, bringing out the mix flavour of the eggs, prawn and beansprout. It wasn't too oily as I believe the leaf soaks up the oil while adding a tad bit of flavour to the dish.

Oily goodness.
I opted to have mine without the beansprout so the uncle threw in more prawns for me. The small portion is just right for a moderate eater like myself but big eaters might want to order the large plate or two small ones.
Thick and fluffy duck egg.

The uncle cooks his dishes one order at a time to maintain the quality and one might end up waiting between 20 minutes to an hour for his Kuey Teow. I say it is well worth it but that's just my option. Let me know what you think if you so happen to drop.

Opens: Monday to Saturday.
Hours: 8pm - 12am (while stocks last)
Address: Jalan Besar, Jalan Simpang, 34000 Taiping (opposite McDonald's drive-thru).

Two neighborhood dogs, waiting with me for food.

Hi there, I was just wondering if you happen to know if this stall is still operating?

HI Alison, I am sorry. I don't know if it's still open. I haven't gone back to Taiping in a while.
