[Review] Philips 3100 series Automatic Espresso Machine

Owning an actual coffee machine has been a lifelong dream of mine. I even googled up barista courses to justify owning one at home but when I found out much a machine cost, it was back to cafe hopping. Then the Philips 3100 series Automatic Espresso Machine entered my life and it was life-changing.

Okay, I know this is starting to sound like a love letter but you have to understand that I am absolutely love coffee. I like walking into cafes where the first thing I smell is their coffee beans. I like smelling coffee beans samples and believe it or not, I can have coffee at night and still be able to sleep. Sometimes my dependence on coffee for me operate as a functioning human being went as much as three cups daily. I am trying to cut down now by pacing my drink throughout the day.

6 Travel OOTDs under RM100 from Jalan Jalan Japan

I am a huge advocate of preloved/bundle shopping. There is always something so thrilling about finding something of value for a steal. I first learnt of the concept during my magazine days nine odd years ago from our beauty writer but never imagined I would be so into it like I am now.

A&W is Back with More AWesomeness!

A&W has always had a strong affinity among Malaysians who grew up in the 70’s and 80’s. Many of us have grown up with birthday parties at their outlets with Rooty® The Great Root Bear and have spent a lot of time at A&W after school and in the evenings for the yummilicious RB Float.

More than a year since A&W Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. was acquired by Inter Mark Resources Sdn. Bhd. (IMRSB), the 56-year-old Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) chain brand is well on track to bring awesome-ness back to its outlets. George Ang, Chief Executive Officer of both A&W Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. and IMRSB said this at the kick-off of A&Wesome Festival, which took place at A&W’s first drive-in outlet in Petaling Jaya to thank loyal fans for their continuous support over the years.

[Food Review] Christmas Buffet Spread at Four Seasons KL

Christmas is just around the corner and I bet you must be wondering what special Christmas offerings are out there for that special occasion. Enter the Four Seasons Kuala Lumpur. Right in the heart of the city itself and neighbour to Petronas Twin Towers, Four Seasons is set to offer an extravagant buffet of sorts to grace Christmas.

If you have the perception that buffet meals tend to be lackluster in choice or quality, then rest assured that you will find none of that sorts at the Four Seasons' Curate restaurant. Because ensuring that its spread is simply top notch is the primary concern of their chefs. And I am not saying that because I got to join the Four Seasons team for a sneak preview of their Christmas spread. I am saying it as a genuine lover of buffets and Christmas.

Starbucks Malaysia Celebrates 300th Store Opening At Bukit Bintang Junction

At what point is having too many outlets in the same vicinity too much? Apparently in Starbucks' case, there is no such things as they have just recently opened its 300th store in Malaysia.

Located in the epicenter of fashion and culture, Starbucks Reserve Bukit Bintang Junction is poised to connect Malaysians with quality coffee through a unique human experience. Kyushu: Kumamoto - Shimabara, Nagasaki by Ferry

If you're planning to travel to Nagasaki from Kumamoto or vice versa, there are several ways you can go about this. The first is by car but as you have to go around Ariake Sea, the drive will take you back up North towards Fukuoka before heading across Saga Prefecture to Nagasaki. With the toll roads, it can take up 3 - 4 hours. The second alternative is by train which follows the same route as the car but requires changing trains in between. And finally, the third method is by ferry which is what I will be talking about in this post.

AirAsia X is flying from KL to Okinawa (via Taipei)!

Starting 22 January 2020, AirAsia X will be flying into Naha Okinawa, the southern most prefecture of Japan. The four times weekly service via Taipei will be AirAsia’s sixth international destination in Japan, after Tokyo (Haneda and Narita), Osaka, Sapporo, Fukuoka and Nagoya (via Bangkok).

I have stayed at Okinawa for three weeks. If I had to describe the island, I would say, if Malaysia and Japan had a baby, it would look like Okinawa. With a tropical climate closer to ours and a food cuisine impacted by Americans and Taiwan, the culture there reminded me ever much of Malaysia. Minus our teh-tarik sea waters. Theirs is pristine blue and absolutely beautiful.

You can read my postings on Okinawa here.

AirAsia X Malaysia CEO Benyamin Ismail says, “Our rapid expansion into Japan continues following the launch of services to Fukuoka and Tokyo Narita earlier this year. Okinawa is an island paradise that offers a different Japanese experience for leisure travellers, including white sandy beaches with clear blue waters, some of the world’s most famous diving spots and unique Ryukyuan cuisine."

Guests from Kuala Lumpur to Okinawa Naha are not required to obtain a visa during their one hour fifteen minutes stopover in Taipei and may return to their seats after clearing a quick security check of their carry-on bags and inflight belongings.

Okinawa is one of Japan’s 47 prefectures comprising 160 islands in the East China Sea. With its unique cultural heritage and local cuisine, Okinawa has long been a holiday destination for the Japanese, while its subtropical climate, coral-fringed waters and relaxed way of life attract throngs of international tourists looking for an alternative to the hustle-bustle of major cities in mainland Japan.

[Miyazaki, Kyushu] Takachiho Beef at Nagomi [高千穂牛レストラン 和(なごみ)]

When I was doing my Kyushu homework, one name popped up consistently and that name was Nagomi - a restaurant/butcher shop in Takachiho that specialises in Grad 4 Miyazaki beef. I was intrigued and hungry because each article and vlog kept describing the beef as melt-in-your mouth delicious.

So naturally I planned an excursion out to Takachiho on my recent Kyushu trip and pencilled Nagomi in for a 12pm lunch for fear of the crowd. Mind you it rained the whole day when we were there so my morning plans around the Takachiho Gorge were cut short and we headed to Nagomi as soon as it opened. Plus I was exhausted from the 2 hours drive so a break was needed.

Kumamoto, Kyushu [Day 2] - Kumamoto and Miyazaki in One Day

Let's face it. When travelling, there will be the sunny days when everything goes as planned and there will be rainy days when everything just falls apart and leaves you soaking wet on the sidewalk. The second day of my Kyushu trip was the latter. Quite literally.

This day was the wettest day of my entire trip and it was also the one day when we had the most outdoor activities in the outskirts of Kumamoto and Miyazaki. I could have cancelled everything but decided ya know what, we have the car, let's just head out and see how the weather holds up.

[Food Review] Gin Rik Sha Restaurant, Bukit Damansara

[Race Review] KLSCM 2019 Half Marathon: Chasing that Pacer Balloon

2.5km into the race, I turned the corner into Jalan Raja Abdullah  and I could see those two giant yellow balloons bopping up and down in the air ahead of me. At this point everyone around me started speeding up, trying to overtake the 3:00 hours pacers. I did too even though the Chinese in me had already done the maths and I knew if I held my current pace, I would eventually overtake them anyway.

Fukuoka, Kyushu [Day 1] - Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, Starbucks and Ichiran Ramen

With a car, the skies is the limited when it comes to exploring Kyushu. After a red eye flight into Fukuoka, I quickly bundled my family into our rented car and was cruising along the highway to our first stop of the trip - Dazaifu Tenmengu Shrine.

There was ample parking in the vicinity but can be hard to find even with Waze and the GPS. Our GPS took us down a tiny path that our car could barely pass through. But in the end, I parked at a lot that was JYP 500 per entry and just a short walk away to the bus station. Amazingly, the parking lot operated on a honour system and I only had to drop the payment into the unguarded metal box provided. Japan was amazing.

3-in-1 Philips SpeedPro Max Aqua

From sweeping to mopping to dusting and just tidying up, keeping the house clean can almost amount to a full-time job. One that remains unappreciated even until today. I am sure many ladies would agree. I remember reading up on menial workload, something that doesn't require training or skills to perform and thus deemed unimportant. But someone needs to do it.

[App Review] Skipping Queues with QueQ

In case you haven't noticed, Malaysians love to queue. We will queue for good food, hipster cafes, over-priced limited edition UT shirts, sneakers and even a McDonald toy. We are undoubtedly a very patient lot but let's face it. When waiting in line, we are literally wasting away precious time that could be used for something else.

Case in point, queueing for food. Take Korean chicken specialist, Kfry in 1Utama for example. I remember walking past it several times when I was shopping there and there was always long line outside it for lunch and dinner. Of course I was intrigued because if there is a queue, it must be good.
And it was.

A quick glance around the crowded restaurant told us that their signature cheesy fried chicken bumbuk was the thing to order. We went with the honey mustard flavour in anticipation of the cheesiness and was treated to a show of the oozing mozzarella cheese being melted and wrapped around the boneless fried chicken by the staff. To keep the freshness and texture of the cheese, half the chicken would wrapped up first and once you're ready, the staff will come back and do the second half.

Another dish I recommend was the Ju Meok Bap aka korean rice balls. We ordered the ham and cheese mix and once again, the staff helped us mix and roll it up into mini bite-size balls. I personally found it to be so yummy with its explosion of flavours and textures that I ended up taking home the leftovers. The rice balls was perfect as a snack.

The sizing at KFry are massive and if shared between 4-5 people, the bill works out to be quite reasonable and you get to try out a lot of different dishes. The Tteokbokki came with a generous portion of seafood, cheese (yes, more cheese!) and between the three of us and the aforementioned dishes, could not be finished in one sitting. This also was packed and taken home. Having anticipated the consquence of their portion sizes, Kfry was ready with containers for us to take home our food. Maybe if you're planning to eat here in future, bring along your own containers :)

Now what would dinner be without dessert. No matter how stuffed we were, there was always space for dessert and upon the staff's helpful recommendation, we tried the super refreshing and super yummy orange bingsu. OMG, forget full. It was like our stomachs opened up again to accept this cold milky citrusy dessert and the best part was, it came in a mini size chilled metal bowl to maintain the finely shaved ice.

I understand now why there was always a queue outside KFry but thankfully for my experience, I could skip the physical queue. Instead, I used the QueQ app on my phone to secure my spot in line while I went to my car to drop off some stuff before dinner. All I needed to do was pick the restaurant, in this case, Kfry 1Utama and key in the number of people in my group and just keep an eye out of the calling number on the app. The app even shows how many numbers are ahead of you in the app which is a helpful indication of how busy the restaurant will be. As for me, the timing was perfect because just as I was walking up to the restaurant, my assigned number appeared on the screen and my group was quickly ushered in.

I will admit - there is a rush of glee to see the looks of envy of those waiting outside. I wonder how many downloaded the QueQ app after that. For now, the app has limited vendors on board with only a few eateries like Kfry, Yut Kee (!) and Dotty's Pastries and Coffee. However, I look forward to seeing the popularity of the app pick up once they have more well-known restaurants and events available online. I do know of several restaurants that could benefit from this (cough pizza mansion cough).

Another aspect of it that would be useful to the community would be its usage in hospitals and civil service offices. Imagine using the app to queue for you when renewing your passport. Hah, no need to wait outside the doors before office hours.

QueQ is available on both the Google Play Store for Android users and App Store for iOS users. For more information, go to the official website.

Disclaimer: This post was an invited app review by QueQ with its partnering eateries one of them being KFry but all opinions here are unbiased and are entirely my own.
