Uncover 5 of Sydney and New South Wales' Hidden Cafes and Restaurants [Tried and Tested]

Sydney and New South Wales, Australia, is a haven for food lovers, with its diverse culinary landscape offering a multitude of delightful experiences. From quaint mountain towns to bustling city streets, this Australian state has something to satiate every palate. In my past few trips to Sydney and New South Wales, I have had the chance to visit several of the state's hidden gems of cafes and restaurants that aren't The Grounds of Alexandria or Speedos at Bondi Beach.

1. Frankly My Dear Coffee, Katoomba, Blue Mountains:
I remember spotting this café while we were driving about Katoomba looking for parking and it was our first meal of the trip. Frankly My Dear Coffee is a hidden gem that captures the essence of a perfect café experience. From the moment you step inside, the warm and welcoming atmosphere envelops you. The skilled baristas craft expertly brewed coffee that tantalizes the taste buds, delivering rich flavors and aromatic bliss. Their extensive menu features delectable treats, including freshly baked pastries and mouthwatering brunch options.

The café's rustic charm and friendly staff add to its allure, making it an ideal spot for both locals and travelers seeking a cozy haven to relax and savor exceptional coffee and delectable delights. I would highly recommend their black licorice bread - a sweetish bread slice served with butter that was perfect with coffee and their BTL Bagel.

2. Leura Garage, Leura, Blue Mountains:

Now, not many places open late in the Blue Mountains but fortunately, you don't need to drive too far to get to Leura Garage from Katoomba. Located in the charming town of Leura, Leura Garage seamlessly combines industrial-chic aesthetics with a vibrant culinary scene. This converted garage turned café and restaurant showcases a menu inspired by local produce and international flavors.

From wood-fired pizzas to succulent burgers, every dish at Leura Garage is crafted with attention to detail. Pair your meal with a carefully selected wine from their extensive list, and you have the perfect recipe for an unforgettable dining experience.

3. The Grounds of the City, CBD, Sydney:
Okay, on a technicality - this isn't the Grounds of Alexandria but it is its more urban sister cafe. Step back in time and immerse yourself in the old-world charm of The Grounds of the City. Situated in the heart of Sydney, this heritage-listed building has been transformed into a stunning café and restaurant. The venue's elegant interior, adorned with vintage furniture and lush greenery, sets the stage for an exceptional dining experience. The menu showcases modern Australian cuisine, with a focus on seasonal ingredients sourced from local farmers.

On top of that, the service here is top notch with the staff more than happy to go above and beyond to ensure a memorable dining experience. Whether you're craving a hearty breakfast, a delectable lunch, or a sophisticated high tea, The Grounds of the City is a must-visit especially if you're in the heart of Sydney itself.

4. City Extra 24 Hour Restaurant, Circular Quay, Sydney:

This restaurant located at the city's busiest water hub took me by surprise. I only later found out that City Extra 24 Hour Restaurant in Sydney is a beloved institution that never sleeps. Situated in the heart of Circular Quay, this iconic eatery has been serving locals and tourists around the clock for decades. Whether you're craving a hearty breakfast in the early hours of the morning, a late-night snack, or anything in between, City Extra has got you covered.

From their famous all-day breakfast options to an extensive menu featuring classic Australian dishes, burgers, sandwiches, and desserts, there's something to satisfy every craving. Their apple pies were amazing and certainly worth the extra calories after a day of sightseeing. With its prime location offering stunning views of the Sydney Harbour, City Extra is the perfect spot to fuel up at any time of the day or night while immersing yourself in the vibrant energy of the city.

5. Pool Cafe, Maroubra, New South Wales:

The best way to reach this cafe is by car but you won't regret it. Tucked away near the sandy shores of Maroubra Beach, Pool Cafe is a hidden gem for beach lovers and food enthusiasts alike. This charming café combines a relaxed coastal vibe with a menu that celebrates fresh, seasonal ingredients. Start your day with a hearty breakfast, enjoy a light lunch, or indulge in their delectable range of sweets and pastries.

With its picturesque location, friendly atmosphere, and delicious fare, Pool Cafe is the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy a taste of coastal paradise along a long stretch of rock pools and walkways.
