Gyukatsu Motomura Tokyo Review

I love my meat. So when I learnt about Gyukatsu Motomura that specialises in gyukatsu aka beef cutlets, I knew I had to try it on my trip to Tokyo. Gyukatsu Motomura has several locations throughout the city, including in Shibuya, Shinjuku, and Ginza. There were three within Shinjuku alone so I was spoiled for choice in terms of outlets.
I got to the Gyukatsu Motomura in Shinjuku right before its opening hour. There was only a couple ahead of me and we were seated promptly at 11am. Mind you, the space in Gyukatsu Motomura are generally small with limited seating so it was no surprise that queues are normal at peak period and at the more popular outlets.

Now. there was only three options of the cutlet set on the menu, varying in weight of the beef. Each set comes with barley rice (with one free refill), two sides, soup and dessert.  Being the tiny eater that I was, I opted for the 130g set meal (1,930yen) and wished I had gone larger because that was how good it was.

What makes the gyukatsu at Gyukatsu Motomura so special is the high-quality beef that is thinly sliced and then breaded and fried. The cutlets are cooked to order and served on a hot stone plate. The result is a crispy, juicy, and flavorful beef cutlet that is sure to please even the most discerning palate. The spicy cod roe offered a salty palate cleanser in between cuts and the grated yam was refreshing as well.

Expect to come out smelling of smoke as the ventilation wasn't really good and most of the cooking was done right in front of you on the individual stone grill. Overall, I had a wonderful experience at Gyukatsu Motomura as a solo traveller. The food was delicious, the service was excellent, and the atmosphere was perfect for a quick but top quality meal.

Here are some tips for getting the most out of your experience at Gyukatsu Motomura:
- Arrive early to avoid the long lines.
- Order the 260g gyukatsu set. It's the perfect size for one person, and it comes with all the sides you need.
- There are many outlets in Tokyo so pick one that is nearest to you.

I would give Gyukatsu Motomura a 4 out of 5 stars. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a delicious meal that is bang for its buck in Tokyo.
