Race Recap: Spartan Race Beast Johor 2017

The Spartan Race Beast was supposed to be in October but due to unforeseen circumstances, was moved to December and to Johor Bahru. This of course raised a lot of protest amongst the participants and with this hanging over their heads, Spartan Race Malaysia had better not screwed up the last OCR event of the year.

And I am pleased to announce that they didn't. I stayed at Puteri Harbour where Spartan had provided complimentary parking for the participants and shuttle buses to and forth to the race site as there was insufficient parking at the race venue. The only mess up was the registration process which took 30 minutes for me when it would usually take 5 minutes. This was due to the newly implemented dynamic bib registration process which assigned participants to their bibs on the spot. It caused a quite a backlog of participants and even some to miss their flag off time.

Fortunately, I had arrived early in anticipation of this and managed to get my baggage sorted quickly for my flag off time. The Beast boasted a lovely 21km terrain of trail and 30 plus obstacles. For once, the course lacked the usual mud and water and was relatively quite clean. The race village was great with showers, changing tents and food and drinks.

Performance-wise, I felt terrific and cramp-free (I am attributing that to the 100 plus and junk food food I had the night before). In total, I failed 5 obstacles (150 burpees) and completed the entire course in 5 hours 9 minutes.

Here's the video of my run. Warning: some cursing involved as well.
