Kings Hall by Cafe in a Box, Section 13 PJ

This was one of the few places I wished had opened when I was working at Blu Inc Media a long time ago. A nice coffee specialist cafe right in the backyard of the office. Kings Hall is the latest addition to the rapidly revamping Section 13 industrial area. Taking up the space next to the SportsCity Futsal Court, the cafe boasts its own parking lot and coffee roastery by Toothless Coffee Roaster.

[App Review] Skipping Queues with QueQ

In case you haven't noticed, Malaysians love to queue. We will queue for good food, hipster cafes, over-priced limited edition UT shirts, sneakers and even a McDonald toy. We are undoubtedly a very patient lot but let's face it. When waiting in line, we are literally wasting away precious time that could be used for something else.

Case in point, queueing for food. Take Korean chicken specialist, Kfry in 1Utama for example. I remember walking past it several times when I was shopping there and there was always long line outside it for lunch and dinner. Of course I was intrigued because if there is a queue, it must be good.
And it was.

A quick glance around the crowded restaurant told us that their signature cheesy fried chicken bumbuk was the thing to order. We went with the honey mustard flavour in anticipation of the cheesiness and was treated to a show of the oozing mozzarella cheese being melted and wrapped around the boneless fried chicken by the staff. To keep the freshness and texture of the cheese, half the chicken would wrapped up first and once you're ready, the staff will come back and do the second half.

Another dish I recommend was the Ju Meok Bap aka korean rice balls. We ordered the ham and cheese mix and once again, the staff helped us mix and roll it up into mini bite-size balls. I personally found it to be so yummy with its explosion of flavours and textures that I ended up taking home the leftovers. The rice balls was perfect as a snack.

The sizing at KFry are massive and if shared between 4-5 people, the bill works out to be quite reasonable and you get to try out a lot of different dishes. The Tteokbokki came with a generous portion of seafood, cheese (yes, more cheese!) and between the three of us and the aforementioned dishes, could not be finished in one sitting. This also was packed and taken home. Having anticipated the consquence of their portion sizes, Kfry was ready with containers for us to take home our food. Maybe if you're planning to eat here in future, bring along your own containers :)

Now what would dinner be without dessert. No matter how stuffed we were, there was always space for dessert and upon the staff's helpful recommendation, we tried the super refreshing and super yummy orange bingsu. OMG, forget full. It was like our stomachs opened up again to accept this cold milky citrusy dessert and the best part was, it came in a mini size chilled metal bowl to maintain the finely shaved ice.

I understand now why there was always a queue outside KFry but thankfully for my experience, I could skip the physical queue. Instead, I used the QueQ app on my phone to secure my spot in line while I went to my car to drop off some stuff before dinner. All I needed to do was pick the restaurant, in this case, Kfry 1Utama and key in the number of people in my group and just keep an eye out of the calling number on the app. The app even shows how many numbers are ahead of you in the app which is a helpful indication of how busy the restaurant will be. As for me, the timing was perfect because just as I was walking up to the restaurant, my assigned number appeared on the screen and my group was quickly ushered in.

I will admit - there is a rush of glee to see the looks of envy of those waiting outside. I wonder how many downloaded the QueQ app after that. For now, the app has limited vendors on board with only a few eateries like Kfry, Yut Kee (!) and Dotty's Pastries and Coffee. However, I look forward to seeing the popularity of the app pick up once they have more well-known restaurants and events available online. I do know of several restaurants that could benefit from this (cough pizza mansion cough).

Another aspect of it that would be useful to the community would be its usage in hospitals and civil service offices. Imagine using the app to queue for you when renewing your passport. Hah, no need to wait outside the doors before office hours.

QueQ is available on both the Google Play Store for Android users and App Store for iOS users. For more information, go to the official website.

Disclaimer: This post was an invited app review by QueQ with its partnering eateries one of them being KFry but all opinions here are unbiased and are entirely my own.

The Life Hostel and Bar Lounge, Fukuoka review

Picking a place to stay in Fukuoka was surprisingly harder than I thought. I was initially torn between staying in Hakata, Nakasu or Tenjin area as all three were busy areas with easy access to the subway stations. There were also many nice hostels in Fukuoka and even a hostel with cats! But ultimately, I had to remind myself of the whole point of the accommodation and after much debate with my mother, settled for the Life Hostel and Bar Lounge, in the heart of Hakata.

Nagasaki Washington Hotel review

Truth be told, Nagasaki Washington Hotel wasn't on my immediate radar for accommodation in Nagasaki. I was eyeing a cheaper aparthotel nearer to Nagasaki Station as I was initially planning to return the car and take the train back to Fukuoka. As plans went, we opted to drive back to Fukuoka and so I had to source for a hotel location that was centralised AND had parking. And that was how I decided on Nagasaki Washington Hotel and it was one of the best hotels I've stayed at throughout my entire trip there.

Viper Arena 2019 Bukit Jalil Stadium

I am back at last with yet another Viper Arena video. Viper Arena has quickly become one of my staple OCR events since it started because it's a quick course of 5-7km, dry and often less than 30 minutes drive away. The recent race in Bukit Jalil stadium was no different with a mix of old, improved and new obstacles.

You can see for yourself.

Were you at the event? If you were, leave a comment and follow me for more OCR "fun". Next up...SPARTAN KUCHING!

Nest Hotel Kumamoto review

My initial plan was actually to stay overnight in Takachiho, Miyazaki before heading to Kumamoto. But a month before the trip, I got a message from the host saying that due to unforeseen circumstances, he was unable to accommodate my group for our dates. So with a heavy heart, I cancelled my booking at his place. Anywhere else in Takachiho would have been too pricey and so I decided to change my plans and stay an extra night at Kumamoto.

Catch Two World Coffee Champions at Roastedly, Malaysia Coffee Fest 2019

I feel that people often underestimate the importance of a good cup of coffee in the morning. Ask anyone in my (tiny) circle of friends and family and they will tell you that I am a snappish being from hell before I have my coffee. Fortunately though, I am not crazy picky about where I get my coffee. Be it from beans, 3-in-1 or via drip, I am totally fine as long as it's good, has a caffeine kick, and I get it before 10am. Otherwise all hell will break loose.
Jason Loo in action
Anyway, if you're a staunch coffee drinker and want to learn more about coffee, the Malaysia Coffee Fest 2019 is currently underway at 1 Utama Shopping Mall. There you can learn how to extract the best brews out of your coffee beans from Malaysia’s very own national and international coffee champions – Regine Wai and Jason Loo.

Behold the fruit once blamed for causing the current generation's incapability to own a house. The mighty avocado! Okay, guys. We all know the durian has dethroned the avocado for that role given how people are going ga-ga over durian lately but nevertheless unlike the durian, the avocado does have its nutritious benefits.

Made up of a sub-tropical chain of 160 islands at the southernmost tip of Japan, Okinawa not only has a colourful cultural blend of Chinese and Japanese but is also home to the smallest and rarest horse breed in the entire nation.

Spartan Race Heads to Kuching, Sarawak

In case you haven't heard - for the first time ever, Spartan Race Malaysia will be headed to Kuching, Sarawak! This will be the first time a major OCR brand has ventured to East Malaysia and why not? There is ample space, jungles and a lot of untapped potential. My money's on the orang asli guys kicking ass and taking the podium position.

If your first response is: Kuching is a part of Malaysia meh?, I am gonna google your social medias and have them deleted! Yeh, that's right. Nowadays, that's even more tragic than throwing paint on your house.

Detox Week 1: Royal Valens™ Letitgo, Fitunix and Qinova review

When I went in for the brief with Dr Esence and took my weight for the BMI reading, I was shocked. My love for coffee and desserts had crept up on me over the past one year and I weighed in at a hefty 71kg! T_T

That's 7kg gained since coming back from Japan where I had lost 6kg. I have always been a self-loving all time voluptuous/curvy/plus-size/larger than life girl but 71kg would probably explain my constant knee pains when running. Losing some weight for health sake became my priority going into this detox programme with Dr Esence.

Are You Guardian's Face of Healthy Beauty?

A long time ago, my perception of beauty was whatever America's Next Top Model projected every season. Today, having grown older and more surer in my own self-esteem, I came to the realisation that true beauty is more than just your outer appearance but how you live life to the fullest in the healthiest of ways - physically, mentally and emotionally.

With this in mind, I am happy to announce that Guardian has launched its nationwide quest to uncover four women, who best fits the description of 'The Face of Healthy Beauty' to be its brand ambassadors. And to be clear, in the words of Guardian's own CEO, Soren Lauridsen, "'The Face of Healthy Beauty' is NOT a beauty contest."

My Return to OCR: Viper Beach 2019 Port Dickson

I can't believe this is my first OCR of 2019. Have I really been that out of touch with my fitness side? I think the answer is clearly yes. Sad die me :(

I even had a reader who joined in one of my bootcampy sessions and told me she realised I didn't write so much about OCR about anymore. That was a wakeup call to me and could possibly be why I signed up for Viper Beach and Viper Arena.
