Inaugural Ironman 70.3 Desaru Coast set for 17-19 April 2020

Imagine this. Swimming in the beautiful waters of Desaru Coast, cycling along its scenic roads and going for a run along a shady route. And to end it all, end your vacation with a medal and the elusive title of Ironman.

Because this is exactly what the unaugural Ironman 70.3 Desaru Coast Multisport Festival is set to offer participants on 17 - 19 April, 2020 at the beautiful luxurious resort space of Desaru Coast, Johor Bahru. This weekend event is the first of its kind in Asia and will comprise of an Ironman 70.3 triathlon, 5150 Triathlon, Ironkids and Sprint Races. There is literally something for everyone looking to venture into the sport of swim, bike, run.

According to Geoff Meyer, Managing Director of Ironman Asia, the launch of the first ever multisport festival in Asia is a testament to the growing appetite for triathlon in Asia. The three days event is designed to offer athletes a wider selection of race destinations and distances while also drawing in fresh blood newcomers.

To share a quick rundown on what to expect at the race, expect a pristine 17km beachfront that faces eastwards over clear ocean waters, white sandy beaches and warm tropical weather. The course will start with a single loop 1.9km (1.2mile) swim with a start line located footsteps away from the Westin Desaru Coast Resort, the official hotel. Or as I like to say, you can literally roll out of bed 15 minutes before flag off and not be late.

This is then followed by a 90km (56 miles) ride on a two loop bike course along the coastline on smooth flat roads. To complete the race, participants will then take on a 21.1km (13.1 miles) shaded run course or 3 loops around the golf course right to the finishline at the official hotel. As an added incentive, this race also offers 60 qualifying slots of the 2020 Iron man 70.3 World Championship in Taupo, New Zealand set to happen on 28-29 November, 2020.

A new integrated coastal destination resport in Malaysia, Desaru Coast is infused with globally renowned hotels and resorts, two championship golf courses, a conference centre and an adventure waterpark. Guests can enjoy a moderate windy climate year round with a natural landscape. "By hosting more international sports like Ironman 70.3 Desaru Coast Multisport Festival, we are able to propel Johor and Desaru Coast's reputation as a preferred sports tourism destination in the Southeast Asian region." said Roslina Arbak, Chief Executive Officer, Desaru Development Holdings One Sdn Bhd.

Ironman 70.3 Desaru Coast and 5150 Desaru Coast will join the Ironman Asia Circuit as the third and fourth races in Malaysia, adding to the existing races which includes Ironman Malaysia and Ironman 70.3 Langkawi.  Registration is now open for the Desaru Coast Multisport Festival presented by Ironman at https://www.ironman.com/70.3desaru  and https://www.ironman.com/5150desaru
