Upstairs Cafe, Subang Jaya review

I first learned of this place when it and its brownies was featured on Capital TV. Then one fine day, I had to swing by Holiday Villa for an interview just before lunch and decided it was the perfect chance to give Upstairs Cafe a try since it was just a stone's throwaway.

Upstairs Cafe is located just above Bawang Merah cafe and offers a balcony seating for smokers as well. The ambiance was pretty laid-back and relaxing with the hues of jazz playing in the background. You can opt for cosy corners or a comfortable sofa area for larger groups. Orders are made at the counter and you will find the menu written on a blackboard behind the counter and the cake display. Provided you don't get distracted by the drool-worthy cakes and desserts, a glance at the menu will tell you that Upstairs Cafe also offers a breakfast and all-day menu.

As it was a rainy morning, I opted for a cup of hot green tea latte (RM8) and found it a delight to sip on. Not too sweet, I could really taste the green tea mixed well with frothy piping hot milk. Perfect for a chilly day.

For lunch, I ordered the bacon and mushroom risotto (RM10.90) from the breakfast menu which is available from 10am to 1pm. I certainly did not expect it to come with a sideline of fresh salad and a fried egg. The portion was just nice for me on account of its creaminess with plenty of bacon and mushroom. The salad and egg helped to mellow down the richness of the sauce. My only issue was the risotto as it was too soft and mushy but that didn't stop me from lapping the plate clean.

Upstairs Cafe is known for its brownies and I couldn't resist ordering a slice. The brownies (RM5.50) is headed up before it is served to you and comes with a dollop of airy cream. The brownie was sinfully, mouth-orgasmic good as the body is gooey and chocolaty rich. There is a crunchy and warm layer on top holding the gooey mess together added a nice bite to the gooey messiness. They also offered mint chocolate brownie although I had no room to try it this time but it did look inviting!

A friend had recommended their red velvet and instead of their cake, I decided I would pack the cupcake version (RM5) to go. The cake was moist and tasty. However I found the cream cheese lacking as it was not light and airy. The heaviness of the texture didn't quite compliment the cake. So far, the best I have tried is Starbuck's Christmas Red Velvet that is made wolf berries and red yeast.

But then again, you have to try it out first before agreeing since the red velvet has been praised by numerous blogs.

Upstairs Cafe is better known for their desserts but there are a few hidden treasures amongst its main dishes as well, the risotto being one. You just need to try your luck with everything there and considering that the price is affordable for good food, great dessert and coffee, I wouldn't mind come back again for lunch. Service is pretty good and prompt too. I've heard how crowded it can get at dinner so it is advisable to make a reservation. Parking can be challenge but not impossible. It is a bit of a distance but there is parking spaces in front of the houses along the same road.
