I am no stranger to the concept of a runcation. Heck, it's easier telling people you are flying off to Japan yet again for a marathon than it is telling them you are simply just flying off to Japan for the umpteen time for fun.
For many foreigners outside of Malaysia, the Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon (KLSCM) is exactly just that runcation for them.
KLSCM has firmly established itself as the premier distance running event in Malaysia, attracting thousands of runners from all corners of the globe. As we approach the 2024 edition, taking place on the 5th and 6th of October, this celebrated race promises to be bigger and better than ever. With a record-breaking 42,000 participants expected, including local and international athletes, this marathon has become a much-anticipated annual highlight.Affectionately known as the "Hari Raya of Running," KLSCM is more than just a race—it's a community celebration for new and seasoned runners alike. Beyond its growing local presence, the event’s international reputation continues to soar, welcoming over 2,500 running tourists from 45 countries in 2024. This represents a remarkable 72% increase from the previous year, highlighting Kuala Lumpur’s status as a must-visit destination for the global running community.
A Surge of Indonesian Runners in KLSCM
Among the growing international participants, Indonesia stands out as the largest contributor, with over 1,200 Indonesian runners heading to Kuala Lumpur this year—double the number from 2023. The rise in Indonesian participation is largely driven by the power of social media, where runners proudly showcase their achievements and highlight exciting running events across Southeast Asia.

Hizkia Tri Hananto, a 45-year-old team leader from Batam, attributes the popularity of running in Indonesia to the influence of social media. "Running has become increasingly popular in Indonesia, and social media plays a significant role in this growth," he shares. Yudha Mega Kusumonegoro, a 50-year-old runner from Jakarta, echoes this sentiment, noting the impact of social media influencers who inspire their followers by documenting their running experiences.
For many Indonesian runners, KLSCM is the perfect destination for a runcation—combining running with a holiday experience. The proximity, affordable travel costs, and variety of activities in Kuala Lumpur make it a convenient and attractive choice. Francis Sukardono, a 46-year-old Oil & Gas inspector from Batam, is participating in KLSCM for the first time and highlights the accessibility of Kuala Lumpur: "It’s close, the flights are reasonably priced, and accommodation in Malaysia is still affordable."
Returning to the Race
For some, KLSCM has become an annual tradition. Yudha has taken part in five previous editions of the marathon, securing impressive results, including 4th and 5th place in the Full Marathon Veteran Open category in 2018 and 2019. For him, this year's event is about enjoying the experience rather than chasing a specific result.

Similarly, Hizkia, who participated for the first time last year, is returning for another run. "I came last year for the convenience, but the lively atmosphere and organisation impressed me so much that I had to come back," he explains. Suyanti, a 32-year-old runner from Tanjung Pinang, shares the same enthusiasm, returning after her first KLSCM experience in 2023. "The euphoria of the event last year was incredible, and I can't wait to experience it again."
A Runcation with Family and Friends
Many international runners extend their stay in Kuala Lumpur, turning the marathon into a family getaway. The city offers an array of activities, from shopping at world-class malls to visiting cultural and historical landmarks like Batu Caves and the Petronas Towers. Both Hizkia and Yudha plan to bring their families along and spend at least five days in the city.

"I love combining the race with a family holiday. It’s the perfect opportunity to do some shopping and explore the city," says Hizkia. Francis, while staying for a shorter three-day trip, is also looking forward to the Active Lifestyle Expo, where he hopes to snag some deals on running gear.
International Growth and Tourism Impact
The growth in international participants is a key focus for the event organisers, Dirigo Events. According to Rainer Biemans, Project Director of KLSCM, targeted efforts have been made to attract more international runners, and the results are promising. "We’re thrilled to see an increase in international participants for KLSCM 2024. These runners often extend their stay, contributing to the local economy by spending on tourism, accommodation, and dining," explains Biemans.
Kuala Lumpur’s charm, combined with a well-organised and vibrant running event, ensures that the Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon will continue to grow as a top destination for both runners and tourists worldwide.
