Japanese Airlines, JAL and ANA Offers Free Domestic Flights for International Travelers

In the travel industry, there is a term for Japan called the Golden Route. It basically means the popular travel route of travellers from Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka or vice versa. The reason why this is a common route for travellers to Japan is because there are three major international airports (Haneda, Narita and Kansai Airport) connecting two major cities, Tokyo and Osaka for international travellers to fly into. Plus, the Shinkansen connects all three cities, making it a kill three birds in one situation for tourists.

But as a result, overcrowding and an influx of tourists to these areas has become prevalent. To combat this, Japanese airlines like ANA has introduced discounted or complimentary domestic flights to other parts of Japan when booked with your international flights. I have used this service quite a few times to travel to Sapporo, Okinawa and Nagoya and I will share that it was very convenient for jetting across the country without having to touchdown in the major hubs.

Recently, Japan's national carrier, Japan Airlines (JAL) has also unveiled a similar initiative aimed at enhancing the travel experience for international visitors. For a limited time, JAL is offering complimentary domestic flights to international travelers flying into Japan on its international routes.

This move encourages tourists to explore more of Japan’s rich cultural heritage and scenic wonders, such as Hokkaido’s natural beauty, Kyoto’s historical landmarks, or Okinawa’s serene beaches—all without additional flight costs.

  • Offer Period: The promotion is valid until October 2024.
  • Eligibility: International passengers with a JAL international flight ticket can take advantage of free domestic flights within Japan.
  • Booking Process: Travelers can book their domestic flight online, and these complimentary flights can be added seamlessly to their itinerary.
  • Destinations: JAL services major domestic destinations including Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka, Sapporo, and Okinawa, offering travelers a chance to explore Japan’s diverse regions, from bustling urban centers to tranquil rural escapes.

Benefits of JAL’s Offer:

  • Convenience: With free domestic flights, travelers can maximize their time in Japan and easily travel to different regions.
  • Savings: Avoiding additional domestic flight costs makes this an attractive option for tourists looking to make the most of their vacation without breaking the bank.
  • Flexibility: The variety of destinations available through JAL’s network allows travelers to tailor their journey, whether they’re interested in food, history, nature, or urban exploration.

Popular Destinations to Explore:

  1. Tokyo: Experience Japan’s vibrant capital, renowned for its cutting-edge technology, fashion, and historic sites like the Meiji Shrine and Asakusa’s Sensoji Temple.
  2. Kyoto: Step back in time in Japan’s cultural capital, famous for its beautiful temples, traditional tea houses, and iconic geishas.
  3. Hokkaido: Known for its natural beauty and outdoor activities, Hokkaido offers stunning landscapes, skiing, and hot springs.
  4. Osaka: Dive into the culinary capital of Japan, where you can indulge in local delicacies like takoyaki and okonomiyaki, and explore the vibrant nightlife.
  5. Okinawa: Discover Japan’s tropical paradise, with its crystal-clear waters, sandy beaches, and rich Ryukyu culture.

How to Book:

To take advantage of this offer, international passengers can visit the JAL website or consult their travel agent to add domestic flights to their international itinerary. It’s important to note that flights are subject to availability, so booking early is recommended to secure desired travel dates.

BUT

For their first campaign, this offer is only available to travellers from a select few countries. They have plans to expand the campaign to other countries eventually.

For Malaysians, at the moment, ANA is our best bet with a similar offer and network to the wider Japan. I look forward to when JAL finally extends the promotion to Malaysia. Given JAL's code-sharing partnership with our Malaysia Airlines, it would be an advantage for us wanting to explore more than just Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto without the hassle of lugging our luggage into crowded trains.
