KLSCM 2026: An Official Preliminary Selection Race for SEA Games 2027

The atmosphere at Wisma OCM was one of optimism and purpose as leaders from Malaysia's athletics community gathered to witness what could become a defining moment for long-distance running in the country.

Malaysia Athletics officially announced that the Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon (KLSCM) 2026 will serve as the official preliminary selection event for the marathon category at the SEA Games 2027. More than a ceremonial signing, the announcement signals a new direction for marathon development in Malaysia, one that prioritises long-term athlete preparation and creates a clearer pathway to representing the nation.

A milestone for Malaysian marathon running

The memorandum of understanding (MOU) between Malaysia Athletics and Dirigo Events, organiser of the Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon, was signed by Malaysia Athletics Deputy President Dato' Wan Hisham Wan Salleh and Dirigo Events Director and KLSCM Project Director Rainer Biemans.

Witnessing the ceremony were Olympic Council of Malaysia Chief Executive Officer Fong Wan Hor and National Sports Council Athlete Division Director Zaim Yusof, reflecting the collaborative effort behind Malaysia's preparations for the 2027 SEA Games.

The partnership places one of Malaysia's most prestigious road races at the centre of the country's marathon selection process.

Giving athletes a clearer pathway to the SEA Games

One of the strongest messages shared during the event was Malaysia Athletics' commitment to putting athletes first. Rather than waiting until the final stages before selecting marathon representatives, the governing body is adopting a more structured approach. By naming KLSCM as the official preliminary selection race well in advance, athletes now have greater clarity in planning their training, competition schedule and long-term development.

Dato' Wan Hisham explained that Malaysia possesses marathon talent capable of competing at a higher level, provided runners are given the right opportunities and support. The initiative is also expected to uncover new marathon talents while providing established runners with defined performance goals leading into the SEA Games.

Why the Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon?

The decision feels fitting.

The Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon is currently the first and only road race in Malaysia to hold a World Athletics Elite Label, a recognition awarded to races that meet stringent international standards in organisation, competition quality and athlete experience.

Scheduled for 3 and 4 October 2026, KLSCM consistently attracts runners from across Malaysia and more than 70 countries. Its international field also includes elite runners from neighbouring Southeast Asian nations, making it an ideal platform for assessing athletes preparing for regional competition.

For Malaysian marathon runners, performing well at KLSCM now carries even greater significance.

More than one race

Speaking after the signing ceremony, Rainer Biemans described the appointment as a significant milestone, not only for the marathon itself but for Malaysian athletics as a whole.

Dirigo Events has long positioned the Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon as more than an annual race. The organisation has invested in raising the standard of distance running in Malaysia by delivering a world-class event while creating opportunities for local runners to compete alongside international athletes.

This new collaboration extends that vision beyond race weekend.

The agreement outlines plans for more structured athlete development, including:

  • Greater race exposure within the region and internationally.
  • Access to facilities and sports science services through the National Sports Institute.
  • Collaborative coaching programmes.
  • Long-term athlete development initiatives designed to strengthen Malaysia's marathon ecosystem.

Both organisations confirmed that further discussions will take place to finalise the detailed implementation of these programmes.

Looking ahead to KLSCM 2026

For recreational runners, KLSCM 2026 will remain one of Malaysia's premier running events. For elite Malaysian marathoners, however, the stakes have become considerably higher.

The marathon will now serve as an important stepping stone towards earning a place on the road to the SEA Games 2027, while also showcasing the growing maturity of Malaysia's distance running programme.

As preparations continue for the Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon 2026, all eyes will be on October, where the race could shape not only personal bests but also Malaysia's marathon team for the SEA Games.
